How Electronics Yorkshire helped ABI Electronics Ltd

Barnsley-based ABI Electronics Ltd, leading manufacturers of high quality test and measurement equipment, has benefited from a business development programme which has improved its production processes, safeguarded contracts and created more jobs.

The programme, delivered by Electronics Yorkshire, assisted ABI Electronics in the purchase of new equipment and staff training and development. The scheme was created to help companies in South Yorkshire access European Regional Development Funding managed by Electronics Yorkshire on behalf of Yorkshire Forward.

Electronics Yorkshire supported ABI Electronics in the purchase and installation of a new automated optical inspection unit manufactured by YEStech. The device, using the latest in advanced technology, offers offline bench-top printed circuit board inspection with exceptional defect coverage. It inspects solder joints and verifies correct part assembly, which has resulted in ABI Electronics being able to improve the quality of its manufactured products, as well as increase its product throughput.

Several of ABI Electronics’ technicians also benefitted from the funding support; they were certified as ‘Application Specialists’ through successfully completing Electronics Yorkshire’s IPC A-610D course for electronics assemblies. Each member of staff who undertook the course was provided with detailed knowledge of the internationally recognised IPC quality standard, which could then be applied within the company’s own production processes.

ABI Electronics’ managing director said: ‘The excellent support we have received from Electronics Yorkshire in terms of additional investment funding in both plant and people has been vital for us in improving our manufacturing capabilities. As a result we have been able to safeguard contracts and expand our operation with the creation of new jobs. In addition, through the IPC training and development input, we have generated a highly enthusiastic and motivated team.’

Established in 1983, ABI Electronics develops the highest quality testing and fault-finding equipment which is used in research and development, repair, manufacture, test and education. The company also offers a contract electronics manufacturing service, from materials procurement to prototyping and volume manufacture.
